2022 Côtes-du-Rhône Rouge “Contre Couleur”
Domaine Gramenon
Michèle Aubéry-Laurent is a true renaissance woman: winemaker, mother, painter, former nurse…and each facet seems to find its way into her cuvées. “Contre Couleur” is the newest one—a blend of red, pink, and white varieties—and pays homage to a term she uses to describe how contrasting colors play off one another to bring objects into focus. Deep, dynamic Grenache feels aptly highlighted by bright and fresh Clairette. Soft and rich, yet still defined, the proof of Michèle’s color theory shines, too, in the bottle. This is an artist who knows her brush strokes.

This festive sparkling wine is vinified following the ancient tradition of one of the most gorgeous corners of France, where small hills grow into small mountains on the flanks of the Alps.

Dark-fruited, with fresh acidity and stony tannins, it’s about as versatile as reds come from the south of France.

An abundance of violets and velvet, amid a cooling sensation of a cold spring on a hot day.

Every three or four months I would send my clients a cheaply made list of my inventory, but it began to dawn on me that business did not pick up afterwards. It occurred to me that my clientele might not know what Château Grillet is, either. One month in 1974 I had an especially esoteric collection of wines arriving, so I decided to put a short explanation about each wine into my price list, to try and let my clients know what to expect when they uncorked a bottle. The day after I mailed that brochure, people showed up at the shop, and that is how these little propaganda pieces for fine wine were born.—Kermit Lynch
