2023 Edelzwicker
Meyer-Fonné
The Edelzwicker, which translates to “noble blend,” is sort of a wine free-for-all. It can be a blend of any of the officially permitted Alsatian white varieties, in any proportion. Producers with a little bit of this, that, and the other blend them into a fresh table white for everyday enjoyment. Meyer-Fonné’s 2023 has a floral, perfumed nose—perhaps from a splash of Muscat?—and a soft mid-palate with green apple and pear—surely a sign of Pinot Blanc in there. The finish is slightly spicy—maybe Gewurztraminer?—with crisp acidity and a hint of nuttiness—that’s definitely the Riesling talking. Tragically, Alsace might be the most misunderstood wine region of France. In spite of its long history of viticulture and tremendous diversity of pedigreed terroirs, a past fraught with marketing mishaps has left consumers baffled as to what exactly to expect inside one of these mysterious tall, thin bottles.

Where the newsletter started
Every three or four months I would send my clients a cheaply made list of my inventory, but it began to dawn on me that business did not pick up afterwards. It occurred to me that my clientele might not know what Château Grillet is, either. One month in 1974 I had an especially esoteric collection of wines arriving, so I decided to put a short explanation about each wine into my price list, to try and let my clients know what to expect when they uncorked a bottle. The day after I mailed that brochure, people showed up at the shop, and that is how these little propaganda pieces for fine wine were born.—Kermit Lynch
